I believe the world has gone flat abs crazy. Literally. You can hardly open a magazine or flip through the channels without finding some sort of advertisement promoting the latest "wonder gadget" or fad diet aimed at getting those highly coveted flat abdominal muscles that look so gorgeous. It seems to be all the rage these days.

So what is the big deal with six pack abs? I'm not so sure this is really all about actual physique and the thrill of just seeing a nice set of ripped abs. I think this has more to do with a feeling, an emotional high if you will. I think flat abs are merely symbolic of something that many people have a deep desire to achieve. Good health, vitality, a sexy fitness, this is what it's all about. All the effort it takes to get them is driven by these things.

One of the greatest of lies is that flat abs are easy to develop. This is not something you will achieve overnight. With the right combination of exercise and diet, you can develop them without any problem, but you have to realize that it might take a while. A lot depends on how much body fat you have, and how hard you commit and decide to work for it.

You will not have any luck focusing on abdominal exercises, doing endless situps and leg lifts, without other changes in your diet and lifestyle. Situps, crunches, leg lifts, and similar abdominal routines are all possible components of a successful overall abs fitness routine, but done alone they are virtually worthless. Doing endless reps of these exercises, alone, is like buffing and waxing an old car and expecting it to look fresh off the showroom floor. There is simply more to do.

The real key is to take your focus off the abs. That's right, quit worrying about those overglorified belly muscles. Instead, think general overall health. Think reducing body fat. You must optimize your diet and work on general fat reduction. This requires exercises that challenge all body parts. A combination of proper aerobic fitness routines along with specific weight bearing exercises works well in reducing overall body fat quickly.

Did you know that you have flat abs already? If you don't see them, it's because they are covered up by excess body fat. This is why doing high reps of ab exercises won't do much good. The exercises may make the abs down under there a bit tighter and more ripped, but you still won't see them until your overall body fat is sufficiently reduced.

Do you really want to develop that nice ripped abs look? Get some solid nutritional advice and start eating foods that actually help speed metabolism and burn fat. Develop a routine around the specific exercises that are most effective in stimulating your body to burn that fat off. Avoid focusing on traditional exercises that are only partially effective. Running and performing exercises that focus on the abs will help, but really getting flat abs requires a more thorough and comprehensive approach.
