Let's face it. Developing flat abs is important to a lot of fitness conscious men and women. There is something about flat, ripped abs that exudes confidence and fosters a feeling of health and well-being. No other visible part of our physique can claim to have this power and mystique. It makes a statement that doesn't need words.

What does it really take to get flat abs? It's probably more than you think. Be encouraged by this - if you want ripped abdominals, you can get them. How hard you have to work for them depends on your present physical condition. They key is reducing body fat. We all have nice abs waiting to be seen, but they are smothered under body fat that doesn't have any business being there. Make it your business to get rid of it.

Here are some tips for getting your flat abs to show out.

Commit to a solid exercise and fitness routine that you can stick with. Don't focus just on abs fitness exercises - they might make your abs firmer and more defined, but they will still be invisible under there. The key is combining the right exercises and movements with the optimum diet for eliminating extra body fat.

As much as possible, eat a whole food diet that includes plenty of fiber and unprocessed foods. Avoid sugar filled snacks and desserts. Daily lunches at fast food joints are what buries your abs in the first place. Make some sacrifices and acquire new tastes. You have to. You can't have your cake and flat abs too (well, unless you workout like crazy to burn off the extra, but do you know how many circuits you have to do to burn off just one piece of chocolate cake?) The best thing is to avoid these unhealthy foods altogether.

Learn to cook healthy food. In our fast paced world, sometime it's hard to slow down long enough to do this. Unless you're lucky enough to live in an area that offers truly healthy dining choices, you're pretty much going to have to do it yourself. By the way, did I say that many of the "healthy choice" items on restaurant menus are not that good for you? Ask for a nutritional analysis and study it carefully. Sometime "low fat" equals "high sugar".

Eat smaller meals more often. Rather than three large meals plus a bedtime snack, spread your meals out over 5-6 smaller meals when possible, and stop eating about three hours before you go to sleep. This keeps your body's metabolism fired up, and helps reduce overall fat when practiced as part of an overall diet and fitness plan.

Drink plenty of fluids. Especially water. Water is your flat abs best friend. It helps your body flush excess toxins that can slow your progress, and in general does all kinds of good things for you.

All of this is common sense, and part of typical recommendations for achieving overall health and vitality. Make a plan. There are some excellent lifestyle enhancing plans out there that literally hand you the keys to flat abs and all that they signify. Be prepared to make some sacrifices, but know that the rewards are far greater than you can imagine.
