You may have heard that “whole wheat is good for you”.
However, this couldn’t be farther from the truth. It’s a big mistake that is preventing a lot of people from burning fat off their bellies. Let me explain…
1. Whole wheat raises blood sugar levels more than sugar!
White and whole grains digest very quickly, which causes rapid spikes in our blood sugar levels. When blood sugar levels are out of whack the hormone insulin is released.
In case you’re not aware, insulin is basically the bus that parks fat cells on our waist lines. Not only will insulin cause our bodies to store more fat but it will make it harder for us to burn it off!
2. Whole wheat causes hunger cravings
On top of that, the spikes are followed by drops which eventually cause us to be hungry and crave more heavy carb foods later on throughout the day.
All in all, it’s much easier to avoid overeating and burn fat by avoiding wheat based foods.
4. Whole wheat contains gluten
Many people are unable to properly digest gluten. Gluten has been scientifically proven to cause gut inflammation and other digestive issues that could lead to pain, anemia, bloating, irritable bowel syndrome, and tiredness. (1, 2, 3, 4)
Even if you’re not completely gluten sensitive you may experience symptoms of gluten sensitivity. (5, 6, 7)
A large reason why this is the case is because the gluten protein has been biochemically altered over decades as a result of modern day food processing. I will explain more below.
5. Todays’ whole wheat is very different from what humans consumed throughout history
Todays’ whole wheat is biochemically altered and very different from what it used to be throughout most of history. In fact, the wheat our grandparents ate only 50 years ago isn’t even close to what we eat today!
Wheat quality has digressed as huge food corporations have discovered different ways of improving their yield and costs. The chemical alterations that it undergoes destroys a lot of the health benefits that wheat once had.
They modified the gluten proteins in such a way that our digestive systems just have not yet adapted to digest them properly. The food is foreign to our bodies. It’s no wonder why there are so many people with Celiac disease nowadays.
6. Whole wheat contains anti-nutrients which steal nutrients from the body
Phytic acid in wheat can prevent important minerals from being absorbed in the body. In addition, wheat fiber has been shown to burn through Vitamin D stores, causing deficiencies.
Bottom Line:
All in all, wheat is one of the foods to avoid if you’re looking to lose those extra pounds. And honestly, for the calories your consuming wheat doesn’t provide the best nutritional value. There are far better carbs options available that are better suited to burning fat.
As our number one choice we recommend slow carbs that digest slowly through the body, preventing your blood sugar to spike (the very reason whole wheat doesn’t help you burn fat). These include legumes (black beans, kidney beans, garbanzo beans, pinto beans) and lentils. They are excellent for their nutritional content and ability to curb appetite.
Our second choice would include brown rice, brown rice pasta, quinoa, and sweet potatoes. Focus on the fat burning foods and you will see results!

May 10, 2016If you do eat bread (which I don’t recommend for weight loss) I recommend the “Ezekiel” brand. It’s has more nutrients and cleaner than most. 🙂

July 1, 2016Wheat is far better than white bread. However, stearing clear of bread altogether is really the best option.

July 10, 2016I’d like to stop eating wheat bread, however beans cause me to be very flatulent and bloated! Only lentil doesn’t bother me. Can you suggest recipes with lentil?

July 22, 2016Is there ANY bread that is good for you? I make my daughter’s school and/or camp lunch every day and there is almost always has the inevitable 1/2 or whole sandwich in it. There are not a lot of options for kids meals since a) you have to provide ice packs in the lunch box and b) there are no microwave options. Thanks!!

July 25, 2016Whole grain bread is healthier than white bread or your average wheat bread. There are also some decent tasting gluten free breads available now.
